Our Story
From Grey Lynn to the heart of Auckland, we've been helping people access justice since 1977.
Our Beginnings
Auckland Community Law Centre began in 1977 as the Grey Lynn Neighbourhood Law Office, created to serve the vibrant Māori and Pasifika communities of Ponsonby and Grey Lynn. Nearly five decades later, as the city transformed, we moved to the Auckland CBD and became the Auckland Community Law Centre—carrying forward the same commitment to justice and fairness.
Why We Exist
We exist because too many people miss out on legal help due to barriers like cost, culture, race, or gender. Our mission is simple: to make the law fairer and more accessible, and to help people resolve legal issues with confidence.
Supporting People to Help Themselves
Our model is different. We focus on empowering people with the legal advice they need to take the next steps themselves. This allows us to meet high demand while offering extra support for urgent or life-changing issues.
We specialise in employment, immigration, tenancy, family law, wills, and Enduring Powers of Attorney (EPOAs), with eligibility criteria to ensure our services reach those who need them most.
Our Impact Today
Each year, more than 3,000 people access our services. Our work is powered by a dedicated team of lawyers, administrators, volunteer lawyers and students, and a board of experienced trustees who guide our kaupapa.
A Growing Legacy
What began above a butcher's shop has grown into part of a nationwide network of 24 community law centres—helping tens of thousands of people every year and strengthening justice across Aotearoa.
